CanNorth College’s Certificate in Practical French is a 24-week systematic language training program focused on developing French listening comprehension and oral communication skills.
The program uses the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC)—the Canadian Language Benchmarks for French—as its reference framework. Course content, learning activities, and periodic assessments are designed with reference to the listening and speaking competencies described at NCLC Level 5. Through 24 consecutive weeks of intensive study and practice, learners progressively develop French pronunciation, foundational grammar, practical vocabulary, listening comprehension, and everyday oral communication skills.
Students who complete the program, meet the prescribed attendance requirements, and satisfactorily complete all learning activities are expected to understand the main points of spoken French in familiar social, educational, and workplace situations. They are also expected to communicate in reasonably complete and clear French sentences about personal experiences, everyday needs, plans, opinions, and simple reasons. The instructional objective is to help students develop listening and speaking abilities corresponding to the competency descriptions of NCLC Level 5 and establish a solid foundation for taking a French-language proficiency test recognized by the Government of Canada.

Program Completion and Language-Test Notice
Students who meet the program’s attendance, assignment, and final assessment requirements will receive a program completion document issued by CanNorth College. The document indicates the program name, duration, total instructional hours, mode of delivery, and the principal areas of study completed.
The program is designed with reference to the NCLC Level 5 speaking and listening competency descriptors and is intended to prepare committed learners to perform listening and speaking tasks at approximately NCLC Level 5 upon successful completion. Individual outcomes may vary, and course completion does not constitute an official NCLC test result. Students who need to demonstrate their French-language proficiency for immigration, employment, professional registration, or other official purposes should take a French-language test recognized by the relevant authority.
